John Dewey

Hands-on learning

I believe in order to teach students, first I need to meet them where they are. This idea includes having an understanding of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, so I know what, if any barriers they will need to overcome in order to come to the classroom, ready to learn. Once that happens, I believe that is when learning will begin to take place. Most students want to feel safe at school because they may not feel safe at home. Mrs. Duncan’s Den will be that safe place for those students. I want to create as many hands-on experiences as possible. Like John Dewey, I believe students learn best while doing.

Students want to be seen, heard, and feel like they belong. I will strive to create a classroom family and a sense of community because they may not feel like they belong anywhere else. I believe my role as an educator is to help students learn and grow into the best possible versions of themselves.
