InTASC Standard #3- Learning Environments

 InTASC Standard: #3- Learning Environments

The teacher works with others to create environments that support individual and collaborative learning, and that encourage positive social interaction, active engagement in learning, and self motivation (InTASC, 2013).

Brief Description of Evidence:

In the Spring of 2021 in my EDUC 240 Introduction to Physical and Health Education for Teachers, my group and I worked together to create a health and physical education lesson plan for third grade students. Due to COVID-19 we were unable to go to a school to implement our lesson plan. Fortunately, we were able to carry out our lesson plan with our peers serving as our third grade learners via Zoom.

Our “students” watched a video to learn about the five dimensions of health and how being healthy does not only mean physical health. They were able to be actively engaged in their learning by participating in the Workout Shuffle. I took all of the hearts from a deck of cards, put different workout movements to each one, and rolled dice to figure out how many times they were going to do that certain move (for example: jumping jacks). Before they could do the workout movement, I had my learners divide or multiply the number rolled by a number 1-10.

Analysis of What I Learned:

When creating the health and physical education lesson plan, I took the approach of my favorite theorist, John Dewey. He believes students learn best while doing and the students were doing just that. In doing the Workout Shuffle the students were the ones doing the movements and multiplying and dividing to figure out how many movements of each to do. I truly believe the more students can take control of their own learning and actively participate, the more they will retain and they become excited to learn.

The learning environment was not in a physical classroom setting, but my group and I worked together to make the best out of a virtual situation. Our goal was to create a learning environment that met the needs for the learners to collaborate with their peers and for them to be actively engaged in their learning. They were able to collaborate in the breakout rooms together when trying to figure out how many movements in the Workout Shuffle they were going to do when multiplying or dividing a number.

How This Artifact Demonstrates my Competence on the InTASC Standard:

I am able to demonstrate my competence in standard 3 because the learners were able to have positive social interactions with their peers via Zoom.  They were able to be actively engaged in their learning by participating in the Workout Shuffle. My group and I worked together to create a virtual learning environment for individual and collaborative learning. Individually, the learners were able to give examples of the different dimensions of health after watching the 5 Dimensions of Health video. The learners were able to collaborate in their break out rooms together when figuring out how many movements they were going to do for the specific card in the Workout Shuffle.
